Just happened to Google my dad’s name and found your site—inaccurate regarding my father (David Smollan) and his father (Jacob Smollan) and siblings (Wolfe, Fan, Essie Lillian), and my mother (Mary Smollan), his wife.
Let me know if you have any interest in the correct genealogy. Judith Smollan Nelson www.ChouetteSac.com
[Ed note: The Smollan family histories were prepared by Jeremy Hodes and others several years ago and we were subsequently given permission to publish them on this website. So far as updates are concerned, I personally have no authority to make any changes to the original material. However, as you will see from the following letter, members of the family do write in from time to time updating their section of the family trees, so by all means please send me the correct genealogy.]
I would like to update some info in the Smollan family tree:
Firstly, my first name is spelt incorrectly with 2 l’s - it should be Michele Brandenburger
Two births:
Izak Zarkon, to Amanda Alexander (daughter of Fred Alexander, son of Lynette Alexander nee Smollan and Zara Alexander, nee Kantor) and Ian Zarkon in 2006 in Canberra.
Jessica Brandenburger, born to Gavin Brandenburger (son of Charles and Michele Brandenburger, grandson to Louis and Lynette Alexander nee Smollan) and Claire Brandenburger (nee Volchansky) on 16 October 2006 in Sydney Australia.
The following are deceased:
Juliet Lazarus (nee Smollan), daughter of Abraham and Ellena Smollan – in East London, South Africa.
Dr Louis Alexander, (husband of Lynette Smollan, daughter of Abraham as above) - In East London - SA.
Anthony Alexander, (son of Louis and Lynette Alexander, nee Smollan) passed away 16 September 2007 in Sydney Australia, aged 59.
Nicole Alexander, middle daughter of Fred Alexander – son of Lynette Alexander, nee Smollan, passed away in Sydney Australia (unsure of exact year- about 5 years ago) Michele Brandenburger
My great, great grandfather George Melber lived in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough with his family. There was quite a large Jewish community in North Ormesby. Is it possible anyone could assist me in finding out why this was so. Robert Dodds

I received this picture from my sister Judy who received it from Elaine Pencharz (nee Sive), who had in turn received it from her cousin Alan Solomon in Australia. It's a nice picture of people in the community taken on Sports Day, probably around 1956. I can recognize some but not all the faces.

It was not until you [Donald] and David Saville furnished information that I realised what Steiner had. It is a great shock and quite disturbing. I remember a General Meeting deciding that items should go to the Boarding School in Gateshead. Then it was left to the three Officers to comply. All three are now dead !! I do feel rather let down. I am trying to contact Zellick Mendelowich about a common ancestor.
Would someone assist me by providing any current contact information. Paul (Pesach) Orbuch [email protected]
Today [22 July 2008] I went to the stone-setting in Newcastle for Yetta Rothfield. We only just had a minyan of ten and about six women, including the Hillmans from Golders Green. Mrs Hillman (Yetta`s cousin) said a few words and Rabbi Lewis read a few Tehillim. Here is a photo of Yetta`s lovely headstone.
It is very fitting that, at long last, we were able to give her a proper burial and we have all done her proud...despite her wishes. She is now laid to rest in a beautiful spot with everyone else just beside the Gateshead graves. May her dear soul rest in peace. Gwen Lamb
