I am searching on behalf of Professor Eric Goldstein - we are both Ziman-Simon descendants and we found the burial record [on your website] but no photograph and we especially need the Hebrew Name of Gertrude HYAMS
Gertrude HYAMS [died] on 20 April 1900 at 62 Bolckow Street, Middlesbrough Gertrude the beloved wife of Shire Hyams and mother of Mrs PLOTTEL & Mrs SLIUFKO….sorrowing husband & daughters. (Jewish Chronicle, September 23 1904)
Mrs PLOTTEL & Mrs SLIUFKO & Mr A HYAMS return thanks……..condolence during the week of mourning for the late S. HYAMS of Middlesbrough [died] 13 September 1904
From Eric Goldstein:
I am of the opinion that the oldest brother, SHAYA HYAMS, may have been married to a daughter of Girsh ZIMAN of Dorbian (the grandfather of Henry SIMON, Benjamin SIMON and FANNY/FEIGE LEAH LEVY) of Middlesbrough, making her their aunt. The wife's name was GERTRUDE HYAMS, born in 1835. She died on April 27, 1900 and is also buried in the Middlesbrough cemetery. In the British censuses of 1881 and 1891, she is listed under different names, "Ema" in 1881 and "Hannah" in 1891. Perhaps she had a double name like Hannah Gita, or something like that.
In any event, while many photos of the Middlesbrough cemetery are on line, hers is not. I am wondering if you might have any contacts in Middlesbrough who might be willing to take a photo of her gravestone. It is located in the OLD JEWISH CEMETERY, plot #33. This will give her Hebrew name, including patronymic, and might therefore solve the mystery of whether/how the HYAMS and SIMON families are related.
Does anyone know who has the complete burial records of Middlesbrough so that we can find out her Hebrew Names?
Louise Mason Grt Granddaughter of Benjamin Simon of Middlesbrough
